When planning a new vehicle test cell or upgrading your existing one with A&D Technology’s test automation or lab management systems, having detailed information ready can make all the difference in getting a quick and accurate proposal. The more specifics you provide about your requirements, the easier it is for our engineers to design a solution tailored to your needs, reducing back-and-forth communication and speeding up the entire process.

Here’s a breakdown of the key areas to address when preparing your request:

1. Test Article: Defining the Scope of Your Testing

The starting point for any proposal is understanding what you’ll be testing. Questions to answer include:

  • Power, Torque, and Speed: What are the performance specifications of the test article? Whether you’re testing a high-performance gasoline engine or a heavy-duty diesel engine, these metrics guide the design of the test cell.
  • Cylinders and Fuel Type: Is the engine a 4-cylinder gasoline, a 12-cylinder diesel, or something else? Fuel type (gasoline, diesel, hybrid, or EV) impacts the required sensors, controls, and environmental systems.

Example: A customer testing an 8-cylinder gasoline engine for emissions compliance will require different capabilities than someone testing an electric motor for durability. Knowing these details upfront ensures the proposal meets your unique needs.

2. Test Objectives: What Are You Trying to Achieve?

Clearly define the purpose of your test. Are you conducting:

  • Durability Tests: These often require robust, long-duration setups.
  • Development Tests: These prioritize flexibility to accommodate design iterations.
  • Emissions Tests: These demand highly accurate measurement and control systems.

Your objective determines the choice of sensors, equipment, I/O, communication protocols, and testing software.

3. Dynamometer Selection

The dynamometer is central to any engine test cell. Information to provide includes:

  • Type: Are you using an AC/EC or water brake dynamometer?
  • Centerline Shaft Height: This measurement affects the mechanical layout of the test cell. This height refers to the vertical distance from the floor or base of the test cell to the centerline of the shaft on the dynamometer or engine being tested. This measurement is critical because it ensures proper alignment between the dynamometer and the test article (ie. engine or motor).
    • Proper centerline shaft height alignment is essential for:
      1. Efficient Power Transmission: Misalignment can lead to uneven wear, vibration, or damage to the driveshaft or couplings.
      2. Mechanical Stability: Ensuring the dynamometer and engine are mounted at compatible heights prevents excessive stress on components and improves durability.
      3. Test Accuracy: Misalignment can introduce mechanical noise, affecting the precision of torque, speed, and power measurements.

Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about the best dynamometer type for your test, our team can guide you, but having baseline data speeds up the decision-making process.

4. Mechanical Requirements: Supporting the Test Article

The physical characteristics of the engine, motor, or battery being tested are critical. Be prepared to share details like:

  • Weight and Dimensions of the Device Under Test
  • Bed Plate Design and Mounting Needs
  • Sensors and Drive Shaft Specifications

By providing this data, we can design a test cell that ensures proper alignment, safety, and operational efficiency.

5. Control and Measurement Devices

Modern test cells rely on a range of control and measurement devices. Let us know which systems are needed:

  • Environmental Controls: Weather station, AC unit, fuel flow meters, and coolant management.
  • Exhaust and Combustion Analysis: Smoke meters, emissions analyzers, or gas dividers.
  • Electronic Controls: ECU integration, CAN communication, or O2 measurement devices.

Having a clear list of required devices allows us to integrate the right technologies seamlessly. Let us know if you already have these devices or if you’d like us to procure the equipment that best fits your budget and testing requirements.

6. Data Acquisition Systems and Sensors

Do you currently use, or plan on using A&D’s iTest software for test automation and/or  A&D’s LabWorX software for remote test cell monitoring? Do you require integration with any third-party equipment or software? Include the following details:

  • Number and type of sensors: temperature, pressure, and other sensors.
  • Required I/O Channels: (analog, digital, frequency, PWM).

A detailed description ensures your data acquisition system captures all the critical data points during testing.

7. Services and Facility Requirements

Specify the level of installation and facility support you’ll need:

  • Installation and Commissioning: Does your team handle this, or do you need A&D’s experts on-site to set up and test your new system?
  • Facility Specifications: Include water/air pressure and temperature requirements, electrical voltage and frequency, and pneumatic sources.

Additionally, details about the console layout or control room interface can help optimize the design for operator comfort and efficiency.

See our Vehicle Test Cell Facility Requirements Checklist eBook for more details.

8. Interface Requirements

Outline the required connectivity:

  • PLC Integration: Will the system communicate with existing programmable logic controllers?
  • Network Access: Specify Ethernet or other network configurations.

Defining your interface needs early helps ensure smooth integration into your current systems.

Providing detailed and specific answers to these questions not only ensures that A&D Technology can deliver an accurate proposal quickly, but it also minimizes unexpected delays and helps get your project off the ground efficiently.
